Business casual. Arguably the most popular oxymoron in fashion. Everyone has a different opinion of what it means to dress business casual, and after about two and a half years of working in the real world I think I’ve finally figured it out. I think. I’ve only worked at companies that have a generally laid back atmosphere, so this post might not apply to everyone, but I’ve simplified the business casual equation into three key pieces.
Blazer + jeans + fancy flats = business casual. Yep, it really is that simple, yet it took me months to get it right. Of course this equation may need to be tweaked every once in a while depending on the occasion. You may need to swap out flats for heels or jeans for tailored trousers, but this general rule of thumb will make it much easier to put together an ensemble each morning. I tend to stick with dark wash jeans in a skinny silhouette for a more professional feel and lightweight blazers for more easier layering. And you can never go wrong with colorful or printed flats!
